New Entranceways Planned
Toronto, August 20, 2015 - Plans are in place to improve vehicular sightlines and pedestrian safety with new entrance gates on Mount Pleasant Road for Mount Pleasant Cemetery as well as the Beecroft Road entrance at York Cemetery.
Mount Pleasant Cemetery
Construction of the new entrance gates at Mount Pleasant Cemetery is scheduled to begin mid-August and targeted to be complete by mid-November. In addition to increasing vehicle lane widths, the new design will provide for improved handicap accessibility with wider pedestrian entrances, ramped curbs and tactile walking surfaces for the visually impaired. The existing cemetery sign on the east side of Mount Pleasant Road will also be relocated from the middle of the entranceway to the south side of the gates parallel to the fence line improving pedestrian and traffic visibility.
York CemeteryThe Beecroft Road entrance to York Cemetery will also see the beginning of a major facelift starting in October 2015. Working in conjunction with the City of Toronto, MPGC is redesigning the new entrance to accommodate a signalized intersection at Beecroft Road and North York Boulevard which will improve both vehicular and pedestrian safety. The improved entrance is the first phase of a larger project which will continue throughout 2016. In addition to aligning the entrance with the new intersection, the vista of the central boulevard to the memorial cenotaph will be enhanced and a tribute to Canada’s Victoria Cross Recipients will be created.
